Whistling Thorn (Vachellia drepanolobium). The branches have galls about 2.5 cm (1.0") in diameter. Stinging ants live in these galls. The ants seem to protect the acacia, which doesn't have toxic chemicals to ward off insect pests. When the wind blows over old, abandoned galls, they can act like flutes and produce a whistling sound. (982k)
