Day 1 of the 1994 Standard Class Nationals was held on Wednesday
June 22nd. A cold front had cleared the area overnight with northwesterly
winds aloft in its wake. The winds aloft were 300 to 310 degrees at about
25 to 30 knots at altitude. The ideal direction for the local ridges is
about 270 degrees.
The day's task was a 249.77 mile flat north-south triangle from
Sugarbush north to Jay Peak then south past Sugarbush to Manchester
Center, Vermont and return.
The task consisted of ridges, ridge gaps, broken terrain, and a ridge
system shift in the Rutland/Killington area (an upwind shift on the way
south, a downwind shift on the way north).
Conditions for the day turned out to be 3 to 4 knot thermals with cloud
bases up to about 7000 feet MSL. The wind backed around to 280-290 degrees
late in the day to make ridge flying a bit more favorable.
Karl Striedeck reported spending half of the distance flying in thermals
and half on the ridge.
Over half of the field of 38 contestants did not fly the entire task, so
it looks like the day will be devalued from the possible 1000 point scoring
day. 3 or 4 people landed back at the airport after only doing the first
turnpoint and 7 or 8 pilots landed out within 20 or 25 miles of the airport
after completing both turnpoints.

UNOFFICIAL STANDINGS received from the scorer at 7 P.M. Wednesday night.
No turnpoint photos have been interpreted yet so standings may change.
