Day 2 of the 1994 U.S. Standard Class Nationals was held on Thursday
June 23rd. A high pressure dominated the area with winds aloft not
as strong as the previous day. The terminal forecast was for scattered
clouds at 4000 feet AGL with a chance of some broken clouds at 25,000 feet.
The local sounding indicated that there should be slightly higher cloudbases.
Visibility 35 miles. Surface winds from the northwest at 10 to 15 knots.
The task was a 219.31 mile quadrilateral course. The first leg went east
to Dean Memorial airport in Haverhill, New Hampshire, then north to turn at
the Colebrook, NH airport not too far from the the VT/NH/Quebec border
junction (it gets a bit rural up there). From there it was west to
Jay Peak, VT and then south to finish back at Sugarbush.
Lift for the day was mostly 3 to 4 knot thermals. Jim Payne reported that
his flight computer recorded 2.7 knots total average climb for the flight.
The first 2/3rds of the course was marked by cumulus clouds with some large
blue areas. A high layer of broken to overcast clouds moved in from the
south and reduced lift for the final third of the course.

Friday and Saturday appear to be non-flying days as a low pressure system
approaches and spreads clouds and rain over the northeastern U.S.

UNOFFICIAL DAY 2 SPEEDS received from the scorer at 7 P.M. Thursday night.
No turnpoint photos have been interpreted yet so standings may change.
NOTE: I should have cumulative scores with my next posting.
