Day 3 of the 1994 U.S. Standard Class Nationals was held on Sunday
June 26th at Warren-Sugarbush Airport in Vermont.
The weather synopsis put on the daily task sheet by Attila the
weatherman (his name really is Attila) read:
"Cold front has moved through. Very moist air. Overdevelopment
later in day. More clouds to NorthWest. Chance of Showers. Winds
South at 12, gusting to 25. Light to moderate turbulence. Montpelier
terminal forecast 6000 scattered, occasional broken. Winds 220 at 12.
Chance of showers. 20 miles visibility."
The weather gods had a different idea for the day.
  It didn't overdevelop.
  There weren't any showers.
At about 11:30 when the sniffers were launched the wind was 10 to 20
knots with occasional higher gusts. The wind gusts almost immediately
became frequent up to 30-35 knots. The sniffers scratched about the sky
and reported broken lift in rotor thermals. Winds aloft were out of the
south (parallel to the ridges) at about 30-35 knots.
Launch was delayed for safety reasons until the surface winds calmed
down. At about 2:40 P.M. Launch started. Competition Director Charlie
Spratt was in the hot seat. His sniffers were not reporting wonderful
rates of climb and there was not a lot of time left.
A minimal task of 63 Miles north to Morrisville and return was called.
As soon as the task opened at 3:35 P.M. the weather gods pulled a fast one
and allowed the thermals to strengthen and for the day to otherwise
improve.
As a result, it was a severely devalued day point-wise with only
three landouts.
