Turkey - Millennia of Antiquity

This is a list of the sites that I visited in Turkey, in the sequence in which I visited them.

Gallipoli

World War I battlefield.

Troy (Troja)

Troy of the Iliad fame, site of the Trojan war. Inhabited since 3000 BCE.

Alexandria Troas

Founded by one of the generals of Alexander the Great in 310 BCE.

Apollon Smintheion

A famous 2nd century BCE temple of Apollo.

Assos

An 8th century BCE city on the Adriatic coast, across from Lesvos.

Pergamum

One of the richest and most powerful kingdoms of the Middle East between the time of Alexander the Great and the Roman time.

Ephesus

The best known ancient city in Turkey, with spectacular buildings.

Priene

Important around 300 BCE, with well preserved Hellenistic buildings.

Miletus

Going back to the Bronze Age, Miletus was an important commercial center from 700 BCE to 700 AD.

Didyma

The 6th century Didymaion, the second most important oracle of the Hellenistic world after Delphi.

Euromos

Little remains of a fairly important city but the Zeus Temple.

Labranda

Labranda was a place of worship since the 6th century BCE with a Zeus Temple.

Hierapolis

The beautiful ancient city of Hierapolis, next to the white Travertine terraces.

Aphrodisias

One of the most beautiful sites in Turkey.

Tlos

A Lydian city with many rock-cut tombs.

Telmessos

Lydian tombs and rock-cut temples.

Termessos

Spectacular site of an ancient city.

Çatal Höyük

Çatal Höyük might be the oldest city on earth.

Sultanhanı

A 13th century Seljuk caravanserai.

Ihlara Valley

Rock-cut Byzantine churches in a spectacular valley.

Güzelyurt

An many-storied underground city and rock-cut churches.

Göreme

Fantastic sandstone formations in Cappadocia around Göreme.

Harran

Pagan, biblical and Islamic sites around Harran.

Mount Nemrut

Spectacular stone figures on top of Mount Nemrut.

Perre

Rock-cut tombs and buildings dating back thousands of years.

Amasya

Ottoman mansions and the Royal Tombs of Pontus.

Hattuşa

A spectacular Hittite city.

Alacahöyük

A Hittite city, even older than Hattuşa, settled from about 4000 BCE.

Gordion

Phrygian capital from the 9th century BCE to the 3rd century BCE.

Phrygian Valley

A scenic valley in Anatolia with a lot of Phrygian remains.

Aizanoi

One of the nicest Roman temples, and an interesting stadium/theater combination.

İstanbul

Lots of interesting architecture, including some Roman structures.
