Sultanhanı

by Günther Eichhorn

Anatolia was on some of the very important trade routes. Along these trade routes were caravanserais, spaced by one day's worth of camel travel. In Sultanhanı is a stunning Seljuk caravanserai. It was built in 1229 under the Seljuk sultan Alaattin Keykubad I. After a fire in 1278 it was rebuilt to the largest caravanserais in Turkey. It has an open courtyard, used in the summer, and a covered courtyard, used in winter.
