Day 6

Rest day didn't cure the weather: only the visitors flew through in tough conditions

The second best soaring day of the Pre-European Championships was, as many presumed, Saturday the 3rd, that had already been agreed as a rest day. It was no surprise, many bet this would happen. The Sunday tasks were assigned, they were quite long, and directed to the east. The smaller 15m class was launched first. Their task was 439km. Already when assigning the task we knew that a thunder front is crowding towards Rayskala. In the east the weather was, however, better and soarable for the whole day. The trick was where to find a route back home in the evening.

Most of the gliders got into eyesight distance from Rayskala, but the area shaded by the stratus layer reached Hameenlinna, 35km out. Clouds were hanging lower than usual. Despite the sometimes incredible glide ratio of the modern sailplanes, nobody came home in the 15m class. The land area between Rayskala and the last soarable weather was backwoods. According to the preliminary results, the longest flight was performed by Martti Koivula, VB, FIN. Differences between the pilots were minuscule, as none came home and most of them landed out in a very small area around Hameenlinna.

Standard class was exciting also to that sparse public that had gathered to see the homecomings. There was a thick stratus flowing over the field area from the southwest already when standard was being towed. It looked inevident all gliders could be towed to have equal changes before the weather deteriorated too much. Luckily both starting points were moved to the east from Rayskala to making starting easier. However, stratus was broken somewhat and the pilots were able to head east for their 404km task. Some unlucky guys landed out almost to the farthest turn point near Kouvola and even behind it. The majority was able to continue the route towards Rayskala. Hard times were ahead again when pilots already had Rayskala in sight. The French span Julien Henry, DA and Laurent Aboulin, EB, surprised the audience that almost had given up hope by their splendid finish in tight formation almost at 1900 hours local DST. The task was demanding and it took them almost five hours, yielding to an average speed of 87,3km/h which is good compared to the conditions.

Half an hour after the French the finish line was crossed by the two Italians, father and son, the Brigliadori. They had found some cloudlets possibly generated by the lake breeze not taking them high, but lifting surprisingly well. The Italians felt that the task was set to the best possible area. There were thunderstorms in the north and the south was cleaned by the sea-breeze, which caused some outlandings on the 2nd turnpoint. Some Finnish pilots blamed the competition directors for a too long task.
